Individual Counseling:
I am available to work with individuals, adolescents. and families. Sessions are fifty minutes long. The focus of discussion will be to address the goals you define. We will generally meet once a week. However, the frequency of meetings may be adjusted to your specific needs.
I use a modern analytic approach to session with allows for a variety of theoretical interventions including narrative therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR (Rapid Eye Movement Therapy), Systems Theory, and 12-step Recovery, among others.
Substance Use:
Substance abuse is pervasive all through society. During our sessions, we will explore the history of your substance issues. Motivational Interviewing, helps weigh the benefits of using substances and of recovery from using. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy will help identify errors in thinking and begin establishing new paths of thought that will help you learn to make better choices. Narrative Therapy will help develop insights into issues that may be driving the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol. You will be introduced to 12-step programs which may prove useful in supporting your recovery from substance use. It should also be noted there are other ways to manage substance use such as theories relating reduction in harm. This other options will be discussed as well.
LGBTQ Counseling:
I have a special interest in helping those dealing with LGBTQ issues relating to exploring orientation, gender identity, self-acceptance, and coming out. I also offer individual and group counseling to men in heterosexual marriages who are struggling with orientation issues. I am kink affirming.
Many people and their families have issues surrounding sexual orientation, gender expression and acceptance. I have no agenda except to provide a safe, secure place for individuals and/or their families to explore, question and find their own truth. However, there is no evidence-based research that reparative or conversion therapy is effective in helping anyone change their sexual orientation or gender expression. The practice of reparative therapy is unethical and, evidence suggests, damaging to the individual. I do not practice reparative therapy.
Adult Men's Group:
Often in sessions or personal conversations, I hear people talking about how hard it is to make conversation when meeting new people, or when in business meetings with colleagues. This kind of anxiety can often lead to isolation in our personal lives as well as difficulties in our professional lives. The group has members who identify as both gay and straight men. While the initial focus is centered around social anxiety and communication the group is ongoing reaching into issues and concerns beyond the initial focus which arise from the group members themselves. The group meets in person, public health permitting. The meeting times are on Monday from 6 p.m. - 7:30.
I also facilitate a group for Trans and Non-Binary adolescents. Often these students experience bullying and ostracism in their daily lives. The sense of being alone creates anxiety, fear, and intensifies Gender Dysphoria. Members of this group, ages 13-17, must have parental consent. It meets on Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 pm.
